Barbara - French in Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Hollywood, LA and the Los Angeles Area

A citizen of both France and the United States, I have lived in Grenoble, Avignon, Lyon and Paris. I was educated at Stanford University and have worked as an English instructor at the Teacher's College in Lyon, a translator for an international law firm in Paris, and a guide for luxury biking and walking tours in Brittany, Burgundy and Provence. My undergraduate thesis focused on French cinema from the 1970's through the 1990's. I once asked a visiting professor from France if there were any required texts for his philosophy course, and, stumped, he told me he'd have to think about it. At our next meeting he announced that the dictionary would be our text; so it has been in my life ever since. A foreign language is like a great big puzzle, with new sounds, new structures and new ways of seeing the world. Be bold, be patient and be curious, and you will achieve success!

The Advantages of One on One French Classes in Los Angeles with Strommen:

"Une attention individuelle" - Individual Attention

If you have tried group classes, bought the books, the software and are feeling a lack of guidance and cohesion - you're right; you need a personal language trainer. 1 on1 tutoring is an effective and rewarding way to learn French. With 1 on 1 instruction you will be making a worthwhile lifelong investment! It's time to globalize, to sharpen our skills; Strommen Tutoring wants to help!

"Parlons-nous!" - Lets Speak! (Real French)

Let’s speak! The most important thing is speaking and listening. In a group class you do pleanty of listening, and waiting to speak, but not much speaking. With private tutoring you will learn ‘textbook French’ but also the all-important French idioms, slang, and colloquialisms that can only be learned in the intimate 1 on 1 setting. At Strommen we find it amazing, but many these terms are seldom taught even though they can be the most commonly used. When you get off the plane in Paris, we bet the first thing you hear will be an idiom!

“Quel est votre niveau de français?” - What's Your Level?

Whether you are just beginning in French, or you are an advanced French student that wants to finally become fluent, a personalized curriculum and one-on-one attention is the most effective way to see and hear results. There is no other class in Los Angeles that will put you in the exact level you need - you will always be placed with people that may hinder your progress; with one on one you don't need to be classified. The class is organic and so is your progress. See some reviews of our French classes on Yelp!

“Lire, écrire, et parler, l'approche multilatérale"

Let’s read, write, and talk: the ‘multilateral’ approach. At Strommen Tutoring we believe in a ‘multilateral’ and organic approach to learning languages. Think of how you learned English as a child. We will use a variety of French texts, from comic books to French literature and plays. We will use reading exercises, unique writing exercises, and oral exercises we have developed through research and application. Therefore we will engage your French ‘right brain’ through conversation, reading and listening but we will also employ your ‘left brain’ advantageously.

"Avez-vous besoin d'aide?"

Need help? Maybe all you need is a little help, or... a lot! If you are taking an online course, or are in a group class, I can help you with your Homework, and conversational French (which is always overlooked), accent coaching, oral exam prep, written exam prep, French grammar, French history and culture, and written assignments.

"À bientôt alors!"
